Considering pets as family is increasingly common. After their passing a period of mourning begins.

Here at the Lisbon Pet Cemetery, this grief finds a special place. It is a place where beloved animals are buried. This is not just any cemetery. The Lisbon Pet Cemetery is the oldest in Portugal. It was established in 1934 within the Lisbon Zoo.

A British citizen’s desire started it all. He wished to bury his dog and honor it with a monument. Thus began a tradition of honoring pets. Today, the Lisbon Pet Cemetery spans 2,050 square meters. It is a well-maintained space. It offers a dignified resting place for pets.

The Lisbon Pet Cemetery provides a final resting place for many species. Dogs are most common here. Cats and rabbits follow. Also, periquitos, canaries, pigeons, hamsters, and fish rest here. Primates and snakes were buried here before it was prohibited to have them as pets.

Funerals were common in the past. People once announced the death and burial of their pets in the newspaper. Now pet funeral homes are becoming more popular.

Love and touching stories fill the Lisbon Pet Cemetery. One notable grave belongs to Chamusca. Chamusca was a heroic dog. She saved a boy thrown into a well by his stepmother. Dali, a guide dog, also rests here after dedicating her life to her owners. The Lisbon Pet Cemetery provides free plots for firefighter dogs.

The Lisbon Pet Cemetery is open on weekdays. Visiting hours are from 9.30 am to 12 pm and from 1 pm to 4.30 pm. Burial costs 132 euros with required pre-booking. A renewal costs 94 euros and exhumation costs 110 euros. The price includes some entry tickets for the zoo. After using the free tickets, owners must pay the zoo entrance fee to access the Lisbon Pet Cemetery.

The Lisbon Pet Cemetery stands as a testament to the bond between humans and animals. It is a place of remembrance and respect.
