Sarah Huffman Perry wouldn’t have known. When she was laid to rest in 1896, she became the first resident of the Perry Cemetery. Right here, in Carrollton, this humble plot of land transformed from a family plot to a community gathering place. Alexander W. Perry, Sarah’s husband, had a heart as big as Texas. He donated land for the Union Baptist Church in 1884 and then more land in 1897 for the cemetery to grow. Families entrusted their loved ones to this ground. Some even moved existing graves from private land to join the growing community at Perry Cemetery. The Perry family themselves weren’t strangers to loss. While Sarah rests here, seven other Perry family members lie in the nearby Keenan Cemetery in Farmers Branch. Life, and death, in those early days of Carrollton was a tapestry woven with heartache and generosity.
