“Imagine a sanctuary of knowledge.” The Perpustakaan Provinsi Bali stands before us. It is more than just a building full of books. It is a cornerstone of learning and culture in Denpasar.

The library’s story began long ago. It started in Singaraja on February 1 1959. Back then it was known as Perpustakaan Negara Provinsi Bali. St. Kosta Soegeng led the library until 1968.

In 1979 the library’s name changed. It became Perpustakaan Wilayah under the Department of Education and Culture. This change was based on a decree. The library was classified as type B. This was because it had fewer than 10000 books.

Libraries play a vital role. They are places for learning. They preserve knowledge. On March 6 1989 a new decree changed things again. Keppres Nomor 11 Tahun 1989 established the Perpustakaan Nasional. Perpustakaan Wilayah became Perpustakaan Daerah Bali. Made Sutanaya BA led the library during this transition.

December 1997 brought more changes. Keppres Nomor 50 Tahun 1997 led to further reorganization. Perpustakaan Daerah Bali was renamed Perpustakaan Nasional Provinsi Bali. It achieved type A status. This was due to its collection exceeding 10000 books.

As provincial offices moved from Singaraja to Denpasar the library followed. The Singaraja branch became a service unit. From 1990 to 1999 Drs. I Wayan Rateng Arimbawa led the library. Drs. Elazar Mangku Barus SH took over from 1999 to 2001.

The law on regional autonomy brought big changes. In 2001 the library became Badan Perpustakaan Daerah Provinsi Bali. Albiner Silaen SE led the library from 2000 to 2008.

In 2008 the library merged with the Kantor Arsip Daerah. It became Badan Perpustakaan dan Arsip Provinsi Bali. Ni Luh Putu Praharsini SH has led the institution since August 28 2008.

Today the Perpustakaan Provinsi Bali continues its mission. It enriches the community. The library offers a wide range of reading materials. There are comfortable reading areas. It also provides a mobile library service. You can often find it at Lapangan Puputan Margarana on Sunday mornings.

The Perpustakaan Provinsi Bali is located on Jalan Tukad Batang Hari XIV No.2 Dauh Puri Klod Denpasar Barat. Its doors are open from Monday to Thursday. The opening hours are 08.00-15.15 Wita. On Fridays it is open from 08.00-12.45 Wita.
