The Perot Museum of Nature and Science has roots dating back to 1936. The Dallas Museum of Natural History opened as part of the Texas Centennial Exposition. In 2006, the Museum of Nature & Science resulted from a merger. It combined the Dallas Museum of Natural History. It also included The Science Place and the Dallas Children’s Museum.

In 2008, the five children of Margot and Ross Perot made a generous gift. It was a $50 million contribution. The museum was named the Perot Museum of Nature and Science. It honored the Perot family.

Designed by Thom Mayne, the building is a large cube. It floats over a landscaped base. The stone roof features drought-tolerant greenery. It reflects the Texas landscape. The Perot Museum prioritizes sustainability. A rainwater collection system captures runoff. It satisfies most of the museum’s non-potable water needs.

The Perot Museum of Nature and Science opened in Victory Park on December 1, 2012. Approximately 6,000 visitors came that first day. The Perot Museum achieved the highest possible 4 Green Globes rating. This recognizes its sustainable building design.
