Church bells ringing. That’s how our journey to Perlie Gates Missionary Baptist Church begins. But wait there’s more to this story than just the sound of bells.

Perlie Gates Missionary Baptist Church stands as a beacon of faith in Chicago. It’s a place where history whispers in every pew. It’s a community gathering place. Generations have found solace and strength within these walls.

The church’s story started long ago. It wasn’t always located where it stands today. Early services were held on Erksin Street. The founding pastor Reverend Johnnie H Head was instrumental. He tirelessly served his flock. He played piano sang and even drove members to services in his station wagon. Think of it a small humble beginning. Yet filled with fervent faith. The congregation grew steadily. The church moved to several locations before settling at its current address.

Pastor Head’s dedication was extraordinary. He established several ministries. The Senior Choir the Usher Board and the Nurse Guild were all his initiatives. These weren’t just groups. They were integral parts of the church community. They provided essential support and spiritual enrichment. The church even had its own radio broadcast on WJLB-AM. This allowed them to reach a wider audience. It spread their message far beyond the church walls.

In 1970 Pastor Head was hospitalized. Reverend Sill Grier stepped up. He assisted the pastor and the church. He showed incredible support during a difficult time. After Pastor Head’s passing in 1979 Reverend Grier took over. He led the church for many years. He oversaw the paying off of the church mortgage a remarkable achievement. He also organized even more church auxiliaries. This further strengthened the community bonds.

The passing of Pastor Grier was another pivotal moment. But again the church persevered. Reverend Milford Netterville Sr became the new pastor in 2018. He continues the legacy of faith and service. He’s carrying the torch for future generations.

Perlie Gates Missionary Baptist Church isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to faith. It’s a testament to resilience. It’s a testament to community.
