Hidden within the bustling urban landscape of London lies Perivale Wood Local Nature Reserve. What if I told you this tranquil oasis is one of Britain’s oldest nature reserves? Perivale Wood has been a sanctuary for wildlife and nature enthusiasts alike since the Selborne Society first took over its management in 1902. Initially, the society envisioned Perivale Wood as a haven for birds. Over time, it evolved into the vibrant and diverse Local Nature Reserve we see today. The Selborne Society’s dedication led them to lease the land in 1914 and eventually purchase it in 1923, solidifying their commitment to Perivale Wood’s preservation. This officially recognized Local Nature Reserve, designated in 1974, spans an impressive 11.6 hectares. Perivale Wood boasts a variety of habitats. Ancient oak woodland dominates the landscape. Pastureland, damp scrub, and areas of more recent ecological disturbance add to the wood’s rich tapestry of life. Five tranquil ponds and two gently flowing streams provide vital water sources for the diverse flora and fauna. A remarkable 568 species of moths have been recorded fluttering through Perivale Wood. The reserve is also home to 17 mammal species and an impressive 115 bird species, 40 of which breed regularly. Among the verdant foliage, keep an eye out for the delicate adder’s tongue fern, a testament to the wood’s ancient history. Perivale Wood’s importance is further underscored by its designation as a Site of Metropolitan Importance for Nature Conservation. The Selborne Society, originally a national organization founded in 1885 to honor the naturalist Gilbert White, now primarily focuses on managing Perivale Wood, a true testament to their dedication. While the reserve’s entrance on Sunley Gardens remains locked for much of the year, a special open day in April allows the public to experience its magic.
