Over the years the Paris Observatory expanded. It saw enlargements in 1730, 1810, 1834, 1850, and 1951. Today, the Paris building houses the headquarters. This is the International Time Bureau. The Bureau standardizes time determinations of the world’s observatories. The Paris Observatory is the source of legal time in France. It uses atomic fountain clocks maintained by its SYRTE department. SYRTE stands for Systèmes de Référence Temps Espace.
The Paris Observatory has multiple sites. It connects many organizations. This supports astronomy and science. It supports activities past and present. Administratively, it is a grand établissement of the French Ministry of National Education. Its status is close to that of a public university.

King Louis XIV authorized the building of the Paris Observatory in 1666. On Midsummer’s Day 1667, members of the Academy of Sciences traced the future building’s outline. This was on a plot outside town near the Port Royal abbey. The Paris meridian bisected the site north-south. French cartographers used this meridian line. It was their prime meridian for over 200 years.
The Paris Observatory predates the Royal Greenwich Observatory in England by a few years. The architect of the Paris Observatory was Claude Perrault. His brother Charles was secretary to Jean-Baptiste Colbert. He also served as superintendent of public works. Giuseppe Campani supplied optical instruments. Construction was completed in 1671.
The staff of the Paris Observatory concluded that light travels at a finite speed. The world’s first national almanac was published by the Observatory in 1679. It aided seafarers in establishing longitude. In 1863, the observatory published the first modern weather maps.
In November 1913, the observatory used the Eiffel Tower as an antenna. It exchanged sustained radio signals with the United States Naval Observatory. This determined the exact difference of longitude.
The Paris Observatory library preserves original works and letters. The entire collection is inventoried in an online archive called Calames. Some of the work is now digitized on the digital library.
