Once upon a time Ann Siang Hill was known as Scott’s Hill. An Englishman Charles Scott tried to grow spices there. He planted cloves and nutmeg. A blight ruined his plantation. He sold the land. The hill changed hands again becoming Gemmill’s Hill. It was eventually owned by Chia Ann Siang. He was a wealthy merchant from Malacca. The hill was renamed Ann Siang Hill in his honor. Ann Siang Hill is now a small leafy green space in the heart of Singapore’s Chinatown. It’s a tranquil oasis. It’s a reminder of the area’s rich history. The hill and its surroundings were once part of the Telok Ayer Hills. These hills were precious to early residents. They were valuable coastal real estate. Most of the Telok Ayer Hills were leveled. Only Ann Siang Hill remains. It stands as a testament to Singapore’s past. The land was used to fill the Telok Ayer Basin. Today you can still feel the weight of history on Ann Siang Hill. You can see traces of Singapore’s early days. You can feel a connection to the past. Take a moment to breathe. Imagine the bustling activity. Think about the merchants and immigrants. Think of them making their lives here. Ann Siang Hill continues to thrive. It’s a peaceful reminder of the dynamic history of Singapore. It’s a place where the past meets the present.
