Step into a world of vibrant green. Welcome to Perdana Botanical Gardens Kuala Lumpur’s oldest and largest recreational park.
Established in 1888 this urban oasis was the brainchild of Alfred Venning the British State Treasurer of Selangor. He envisioned a tranquil escape from the bustling city a refuge where nature’s beauty could thrive. His vision materialized in a sprawling 91.6 hectares of meticulously landscaped gardens.
The Perdana Botanical Gardens weren’t always known by this name. Initially called Public Gardens it later became Lake Gardens. It was eventually renamed Taman Tasik Perdana before finally receiving its current name in 2011. This renaming marked a significant phase in transforming the park into a true botanical garden.
Perdana Botanical Gardens is more than just a pretty face. It holds a fascinating historical tapestry. The British Resident Frank Swettenham authorized funding for the park. A prominent figure from the Cantonese community Towkay Chow Ah Yeok contributed generously to the initial planting. An ornamental lake was created by damming the Sungei Bras Bras. It was originally named Sydney Lake after Swettenham’s wife.
The gardens weren’t only a place of recreation. They also housed the official residence of Frank Swettenham now known as Carcosa Seri Negara. A social club the Lake Club later renamed the Royal Lake Club was established in 1890. It was initially exclusive to Europeans dominating the social scene for decades.
Today Perdana Botanical Gardens is a haven of biodiversity. It houses attractions like the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park and the Kuala Lumpur Butterfly Park. The Bird Park opened in 1991 boasting over 3000 birds from more than 200 species. The Butterfly Park followed in 1992 showcasing thousands of butterflies exotic plants and ferns.
