Peranakan Place

In 1984, a shared dream breathed new life into a row of shophouses on Orchard Road. Peranakan Place, formerly Peranakan Corner, became a testament to the vibrant Peranakan culture. Peranakan Place comprises six two-story shophouses. These shophouses were built around 1902. The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) leased the buildings to a dedicated group. This group included an antique dealer, an architect, a property developer, and a 10th-generation Peranakan. Their vision was to create a hub that celebrated the Peranakan spirit. They achieved this by showcasing its unique blend of Chinese and Malay influences. The URA recognized Emerald Hill’s historical significance. In 1985, they declared it a conservation area. This ensured the preservation of Peranakan Place and the surrounding area’s distinctive architecture. The restoration of Peranakan Place revealed the beauty of the Chinese Baroque style. This style blended European and Chinese elements. Doric columns stood alongside brightly colored ceramic tiles adorned with flower and bird motifs. The revitalized Peranakan Place housed a variety of businesses. Bibi’s, a nightspot, offered Peranakan food and theatrical entertainment. A museum showcased Peranakan artifacts and history. A shop sold antiques, cooking utensils, ingredients, and cookbooks. These establishments drew both tourists and locals. They offered a taste of Peranakan culture and heritage. In the 1990s, Peranakan Place underwent another renovation. It continued to evolve while maintaining its historical charm. In 2015, a Singapore Visitor Centre opened nearby. This further enhanced Peranakan Place’s appeal as a destination. Peranakan Place continues to captivate visitors with its covered walkways. It offers a unique blend of history, culture, and commerce. The spirit of the Peranakan community lives on. It thrives within the walls of these beautifully restored shophouses.
