Ruins whisper stories. Here before us stands the Pensil Mexicano a poignant reminder of Mexico City’s opulent past. This Baroque garden once a jewel among the city’s pleasure grounds is now sadly decaying.

Imagine this place in its prime. Built in 1766 it was originally known as the Pensil Americano. The name Pensil itself means delightful garden in Old Castilian. It was a place of recreation for the wealthy. The grounds boasted glorious fountains sculptures and ornate decorations. The main orchard entrance featured arches topped with a coat of arms.

The name changed to Pensil Mexicano during the US invasion. This clever move helped protect the property from seizure. It had once belonged to Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid. He was a Spanish military hero and an honorary citizen of the USA. He even fought alongside George Washington. The Pensil Mexicano was a place he would visit.

Emperor Maximilian and his wife Carlota also visited. They were drawn to its beauty. The Pensil Mexicano was a true oasis. It provided a welcome escape from the bustling city.

Sadly much of the original beauty is lost. Warehouses now stand where once flourished orchards. Vandalism and neglect have taken their toll on the remaining structures. The facade is crumbling. Graffiti mars the walls. Yet fragments of the chapel its tower and parts of the gardens survive.

Despite its current state the Pensil Mexicano remains a registered historical monument. Its story reminds us of a bygone era of elegance and leisure. It’s a reminder of Mexico City’s rich history. The Pensil Mexicano’s story is not over. Efforts to restore it continue. Perhaps one day this delightful garden will be restored to its former glory.
