Welcome to Penola Catholic College, a vibrant hub of learning and faith in Melbourne’s vibrant northwestern suburbs. Standing proudly on Camp Road, Penola Catholic College has a rich and fascinating history. The school was formed in 1995 through the amalgamation of three schools: Therry College, Geoghegan College, and Sancta Sophia College. This significant event brought together diverse communities and traditions, shaping the present-day Penola into a diverse and welcoming school.
The college’s name itself has a unique backstory, deeply connected to the legacy of Saint Mary MacKillop. Penola, a small town in South Australia, holds a special significance as the birthplace of Mary MacKillop’s first school in 1866. The Sisters of St Joseph had a presence on this site in Broadmeadows, establishing a foundling home in 1901. This historical link inspired the choice of the name “Penola,” which also resonated with the connection to the Aboriginal meaning of “stringybark.”
Penola is a school that prides itself on the values of faith, excellence, and community—principles reflected in their emblem, which depicts a tree with three leaves, symbolizing spiritual, physical, and intellectual growth. The cross at the base of the tree represents Christ, serving as a guiding model for students.
As you wander through the grounds, you’ll notice a blend of historical and modern buildings, each contributing to the unique character of the college. The original buildings from St Joseph’s Babies Home, including the magnificent St Joseph’s Chapel completed in 1924, are a testament to the legacy of these grounds. These historic structures create a sense of connection to the past, while modern additions like the Performing Arts Centre ensure students have access to state-of-the-art facilities. Penola Catholic College is an emblem of growth, adaptation, and commitment to student success, an institution where tradition and progress coexist harmoniously.
