Nestled on the western edge of Dresden, Pennrich whispers tales of a time long past. Pennrich first appeared in records in 1378. But the name itself, possibly derived from the old Sorbian word for “tree stump,” hints at an even earlier Slavic settlement. Imagine Pennrich as a bustling medieval village. Farmers tilled the land. The Altnossener Straße, a vital route connecting Dresden-Leubnitz and the Altzella monastery, brought travelers and trade through Pennrich. The echoes of history are strong here. The Thirty Years’ War, the Battle of Kesselsdorf in 1745, and even the Napoleonic Wars left their mark on Pennrich. A mass grave near the old school serves as a somber reminder of these conflicts. Pennrich remained largely agricultural until the 19th century. Seven farms formed the core of the village, later joined by smaller businesses and even a brickyard. A new school, serving Pennrich, Gompitz, and Zöllmen, opened in 1879. The 20th century brought significant changes to Pennrich. Incorporated into Gompitz in 1950, and then into Dresden in 1999, Pennrich transitioned from a rural village to a Dresden suburb. The post-reunification housing boom transformed the landscape with new homes. New businesses sprang up along the B173, reflecting the changing times. Pennrich today retains a unique blend of old and new. The renovated Sonnenuhr (sundial) stands as a testament to its past. While the Gasthof Pennrich might be temporarily closed, the community center, housed in the old Pennricher Vorwerk, continues to serve the community. And for a touch of nature, the protected Zschonergrund valley is just a short trip from Pennrich. Take the tram line 7 to the terminus. Experience the unique blend of history and modern life that defines Pennrich.
