“Ever wonder how a district can be both a haven for the elite and a lifeline for fishermen?” That’s Penjaringan for you. Today, we will explore Penjaringan in North Jakarta. Penjaringan stands as the westernmost district, a place of surprising contrasts.

Penjaringan’s history is as rich as its present is diverse. Once a crucial port for West Java’s kingdom of Pakuan Pajajaran and Batavia, the Ciliwung River’s mouth bustled with trade. In the 16th century, Muara Angke served as a strategic post for capturing Sunda Kelapa from the Portuguese. The Sultanate of Banten and the Sultanate of Demak recognized its value.

The 17th century saw the Dutch transform Penjaringan into a shipbuilding hub. Warehouses and facilities arose. Some structures remain even today, like the Maritime Museum and Galangan Kapal VOC. The VOC trade office was built in 1628.

As Batavia grew in the 18th century, villages like Kampung Luar Batang emerged. The Luar Batang Mosque, established in 1739, became a focal point. It still stands as a testament to the area’s enduring faith.

Move forward to the 1970s. Jakarta needed a modern fishing port. Pelabuhan Perikanan Samudera Jakarta, or PPSJ, was born. It’s also known as Jakarta Fishing Port. Construction spanned from 1980 to 2002.

Penjaringan cradles remnants of Jakarta’s original mangrove forest. The Muara Angke Wildlife Sanctuary protects some of these areas. The Angke Kapuk Nature Tourism Park, a privately-owned area, also contributes to preservation efforts.

Penjaringan faces a constant challenge: flooding. Being a low-lying coastal area, high tides pose a threat. Plans are underway to combat this, with dikes playing a crucial role. In 2008, seven dikes were installed. They included the Muara Baru dike and the Luar Batang dike.

The district is further divided into five administrative villages. These are Penjaringan, Pluit, Pejagalan, Kapuk Muara and Kamal Muara. Each area contributes to Penjaringan’s unique character.

Don’t miss the Maritime Museum. It showcases Indonesia’s maritime history. Also explore the Muara Angke Wildlife Sanctuary. Finally, discover the Luar Batang Mosque and the adjoining village. Both have existed since the 17th century.

So, as we stand here in Penjaringan, remember its layers. From ancient ports to modern-day challenges, it’s a place where history and nature intertwine. The elite and the fishermen coexist.
