“A RM10 million facelift you say?” I overheard two shoppers whispering near Birch the Plaza. Penang Times Square isn’t just a shopping destination. It’s a living testament to Penang’s transformation. Right here before you stands a modern marvel. But its story begins long before these gleaming malls and condominiums.
Before the stylish boutiques and trendy nightclubs of Penang Times Square there was something else entirely. For almost a century this land hummed with a different kind of energy. The rhythmic clang of hammers the intense heat of furnaces. This was the site of Eastern Smelting a tin smelting plant established way back in 1897. Tin from Perak and Southern Thailand was brought here. It was smelted into ingots then shipped out from Penang’s bustling port.
This industrious past faded with the decline of Malaysia’s tin industry. The smelting plant closed its doors. The era of heavy industry gave way to a vision of urban renewal. Ivory Properties Group saw the potential. In 2005 they acquired the land. The ambitious Penang Times Square project was born. It’s a multi-phased development comprising office blocks condominiums and of course these shopping malls.
Phase 1 saw the rise of Birch the Plaza. This podium block houses offices commercial spaces and the first of Penang Times Square’s shopping malls. Inside you’ll find a diverse array of shops from fashion boutiques to electronic stores even a few nightclubs. The Food Gallery offers a delicious taste of local hawker fare. But Birch the Plaza wasn’t content to rest on its laurels. As I mentioned a significant renovation project took place in 2016 boosting its appeal and tenancy.
Phase 2 brought us M Mall O2O. It opened its doors in 2016 adding another dimension to Penang Times Square. This mall boasts Penang’s first wax museum. There are cultural-themed streets and impressive wall artwork. It also offers a similar mix of restaurants electronic stores and personal care shops to Birch the Plaza.
Penang Times Square is more than just brick and mortar. It’s a story of transition. It’s a story of industry giving way to commerce and innovation. It’s a place where Penang’s past meets its vibrant present and continues to shape its future. The remaining phases of the project are still under development. But even now Penang Times Square stands as a landmark. It shows the dynamic evolution of George Town a place where history and modernity intertwine. Enjoy exploring Penang Times Square. Who knows what transformations await in the years to come?
