Gazing up at the Penang Masonic Temple, have you ever wondered about the secrets hidden behind its Art Deco facade? This magnificent structure, located at 136 Jalan Utama, stands as a testament to the rich history of Freemasonry in Penang. The Penang Masonic Temple’s story begins in 1924. Two prominent lodges, the Royal Prince of Wales Lodge No. 1555 and Lodge Scotia No. 1003, decided to pool their resources. They envisioned a shared space, a grand temple that would serve as a central meeting place for all Masonic bodies in the area. Thus, the Penang Masonic Temple Company Limited, now known as Penang Masonic Temple Sdn Bhd, was born. The land was acquired in 1926, and on December 17, 1927, the foundation stone was laid, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Freemasonry in Penang. The temple’s design, a stunning example of Art Deco architecture, was conceived by the talented architect Howard Leicester. Contractor Lee Ghee Sok brought Leicester’s vision to life, constructing the temple at a cost of M$31,292.50. The Penang Masonic Temple isn’t just a historical landmark; it’s a living testament to the enduring traditions of Freemasonry. The founding lodges continue to hold their meetings within its hallowed halls. Seven other Masonic bodies, both English and Scottish, also utilize the space, ensuring the temple remains a vibrant center of Masonic activity. Today, the Penang Masonic Temple stands proudly on Jalan Utama, its white exterior and blue Art Deco details a striking sight. It serves as a reminder of the important role Freemasonry has played in Penang’s history, a beacon of tradition in a rapidly changing world.
