Originally named Bayan Lepas International Airport, its story began in 1935. The airport is located in Bayan Lepas. This is on the southeastern part of Penang Island. It lies approximately 16 kilometers south of George Town.
Back in the early 1960s, an airfield emerged in Bayan Lepas. This area was once swampy land. It was drained and reclaimed for this purpose. A significant expansion took place in the 1970s. During this time a new terminal building showcasing Minangkabau design was erected. The runway was extended. This allowed the airport to accommodate Boeing 747 aircraft.
The new terminal building and runway were officially opened on June 2 1979. The Yang Di-Pertua Negri of Penang Tun Haji Sardon bin Jubir officiated the opening.
Since its opening, Penang International Airport has undergone several renovations. These expansions include a new check-in wing added in early 2009. In 2011 another renovation and expansion program began. It cost RM250 million. The project was scheduled for completion by the end of 2012.
Penang International Airport now has an annual capacity of 5 million passengers. In 2011 it handled 4.5 million passengers. The airport has 64 check-in desks and 11 gates. It also has 8 aerobridges and 3 baggage claim belts. Cargo facilities include seven freighter docks for the B747.
Several airlines operate at Penang International Airport. AirAsia, Cathay Pacific and China Airlines are examples. Cargo airlines include Air Hong Kong, Asiana Cargo and Cathay Pacific Cargo.

In 2008 the airport handled 3.4 million passengers. There were 43796 aircraft movements. It also handled 192936 metric tonnes of cargo.
