Fukien Girls’ School. That’s the name it started with. It is now known as Penang Chinese Girls Primary School. The establishment of this school in 1919 was spurred by the lack of educational opportunities for girls in the Hokkien community. Let’s step back in time to understand its origins.

In March 1919, leaders from the Penang Philomatic Union convened a meeting. They sought to create a school specifically for Hokkien girls. Ninety-one people were entrusted with this mission. Initial funding came from the Fujian Province flood disaster relief. Therefore, they named the school Fukien Girls’ School.

Originally, the school aimed to open in January 1920. However, it was delayed due to limited enrollment. Finally, on March 8, 1920, Fukien Girls’ School began operating at Dato Kramat Road. Back then society was conservative. The idea of girls seeking education faced resistance. The Penang Philomatic Union remained committed. They introduced a six-year primary school curriculum. The school struggled financially due to its location.

By 1923, enrollment grew. The school relocated to Acheh Street. Mr Chen Jiageng. He was a local educationist who sold the property for a reduced price. He then donated a third of it back to the school. This marked the first time Fukien Girls’ School owned its premises.

In 1951, a significant change occurred. Following a suggestion by Dr Lee Kong Chian, the school was renamed. It became Penang Chinese Girls Primary School. This change aimed to better reflect its socio-cultural context.

Fast forward to 1958. All primary schools in Malaya began receiving government subsidies. Following the Rahman Talib Report, the school was officially named SRJK C Perempuan China Pulau Pinang. Free education was implemented in 1962. This lightened the financial load on families.

Looking at Penang Chinese Girls Primary School today it is a different world. The campus is bigger. The classrooms are full of girls and also boys. This school has deep roots in Penang’s history. It continues to evolve. It shapes young minds with its legacy of education for all.
