Ever wonder how a village gets its name? Pemecutan Kelod, a vibrant village nestled in Denpasar Barat, has a name rooted in a fascinating legend. Pemecutan Kelod’s story begins with a journey. A nobleman, Arya Bebed, sought guidance from the divine at Mount Batur. He was told to seek a land to the south that appeared “badeng” or hazy. This hazy land became the kingdom of Badung. Arya Bebed, along with his companion Ki Andhagala, eventually settled in the area. He established a Puri, or palace, at Pemedilan. It is believed that this Puri became known as Pemecutan, derived from “pecut,” meaning whip. This whip was a divine gift bestowed upon Arya Bebed during his spiritual journey. He subsequently took the title I Gusti Ngurah Pemecutan. One of his sons, known for his courage and prowess, earned renown in the Klungkung Kingdom. He became king, taking the title Kyai Anglurah Pemecutan III, or Ida Bhatara Sakti. Under his rule, the kingdom flourished. The area around the Puri likely became known as Desa Pemecutan, reflecting the growing influence of the royal family. Pemecutan Kelod itself emerged later, as an extension of the original Pemecutan village. It became part of the Desa Pakraman Denpasar, a traditional village community. Pemecutan Kelod’s story intertwines with the larger narrative of the Badung Kingdom and the development of Denpasar. The village’s formation involved a complex process of administrative decisions and community organization. It represents a blend of historical legacy and modern development, a testament to the enduring spirit of Bali.
