Behold Pemberton Castle Plaque. Its weathered aluminium gleams in the Texas sun. This unassuming marker tells a tale far grander than its size suggests. It speaks of a structure that began not as a castle but as a humble water tower in the 1890s. A cylindrical sentinel guarding the outskirts of Austin. It served a vital purpose providing water for firefighting and irrigating nearby farms.

Pemberton Castle’s transformation began in the mid-1920s. Samuel Budley Fisher a visionary developer saw potential beyond the tower’s practical use. He envisioned a sales office unlike any other to lure buyers to his new subdivision Pemberton Heights. Fisher’s ambition breathed life into the water tower. The plain cylinder became a Gothic Revival castle a whimsical landmark. Limestone wings extended on either side. Squared notches crowned the structure adding to its majestic appearance.

The Castle’s role as a sales office was short-lived. The Great Depression cast a shadow over its fairytale beginnings. The American National Bank of Austin took ownership in 1932. An advertisement in the Austin American in 1935 pleaded for a buyer for this eccentric beauty. The price a mere $8000.

But Pemberton Castle was destined for more than failed sales. Samuel Gideon a prominent Texas architect and professor at UT purchased it in 1937. He didn’t just restore it he enhanced it. Gideon infused his architectural expertise into the structure. He added distinctive features salvaged from demolished UT buildings. Bricks stained glass even Pennsylvania slate flooring found a home in the Castle.

A rotating gothic window now a focal point became a walk-out exit to a garden terrace. Stones from the O Henry House were incorporated into the south wall. The staircase reportedly crafted by a Swiss woodcarver Peter Mansbendel from the Bishop Kinsolving house found its place in Gideon’s masterpiece. Gideon created a studio on the second floor transforming the water tower into a charming residence.

Pemberton Castle’s history continues with a parade of colourful owners. Actress Grace Libby Foster Winters Bunch and her husband an architectural engineer owned it from 1966 to 1982. They added a castellated carport which later became an enclosed garage. Mrs Winters even painted a portrait of the castle’s resident ghost a lady in a Camelot gown. This ghost a tragic bride is said to roam the castle grounds in the early hours. Her enraged groom also allegedly haunts the place.

Retired Associate Justice of the Texas Supreme Court William W Kilgarlin and his wife were owners from 1982 to 1994. They added modernizations while preserving the castle’s dignity. Motorola Dell executive Morton Topfer and his wife Angela acquired the property in 1994. They painstakingly restored its historic appearance ensuring its legacy lives on. Their efforts earned Pemberton Castle its official Texas Historical Marker in 1996. This plaque you stand before is a testament to that achievement. A small but significant marker marking a remarkable past.
