“Ever heard of a princess escaping a forced marriage by wearing a donkey’s skin?” That’s the essence of Peau d’Âne. Here we explore the tale’s origins. Peau d’Âne translates to Donkeyskin. It is a famous French fairy tale.

Charles Perrault penned the most well-known version. It surfaced in 1694. Later, it was included in “Contes de ma mère l’Oye” starting in 1781. Some consider it the first French fairy tale ever written.

The story of Peau d’Âne involves a king. He promised his dying wife he’d only remarry someone more beautiful than her. After her death, he sought a new queen. Sadly, the only woman surpassing his late wife’s beauty was his own daughter.

To avoid this union, the princess sought her fairy godmother’s advice. She demanded impossible gowns as dowry. First, a dress the color of time. Next, one like the moon. Finally, a sun-colored gown. The king fulfilled each request.

Then, she asked for his magical donkey. This donkey produced gold coins instead of dung. The king reluctantly agreed. The princess fled the castle. She wore the donkey’s skin. She also carried her gowns.

Peau d’Âne found work as a kitchen maid in a neighboring kingdom. One day, a prince saw her in her sun-colored dress. He fell deeply in love. Back at the palace, he became lovesick. He requested Peau d’Âne bake him a cake. While baking, her ring accidentally fell into the batter.

The prince found the ring and declared a quest. Every woman in the land must try it on. The ring fit Peau d’Âne perfectly. Her donkey skin fell away. She stood revealed in her beautiful gown. The prince married her. Their wedding lasted three months.

Her father attended the wedding. He realized his error. He sought his daughter’s forgiveness. He blessed her marriage and new life as queen.

Even young King Louis XIV loved Peau d’Âne. His nurse often told him the story until he was seven. Molière’s play “Le Malade imaginaire” also mentions it. La Fontaine referenced it too.

The tale has inspired many adaptations. These include operas, films, and ballets. Jacques Demy directed a famous movie version in 1970. Peau d’Âne remains a timeless story. It explores themes of love and identity. The magic of Peau d’Âne continues to enchant us all.
