“It’s gooey It’s gummy It’s like glue” That’s what I heard echoing from inside the Pearl City Public Library. This isn’t just any library. It’s a vibrant hub a community center a place where stories come alive. Opened on November 15 1969 as the Pearl City Regional Library it’s one of Oahu’s largest. It’s also one of only three Oahu libraries open on Sundays. The Pearl City Public Library sits next to the Pearl City Police Station.
More than just books though this library offers a world of activities. Every Thursday mornings are filled with the joyous sounds of story time. Children aged 18 months to 4 years old explore age-appropriate puzzles and toys. This develops their fine motor and problem-solving skills. It’s a fun way to learn. Older adults can participate in Tai Chi classes. Instructor Ron Ishimaru a Tai Chi for Health Institute certified instructor leads these sessions. He teaches Sun style Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention. It’s an evidenced-based exercise program endorsed by the CDC and the Hawaii Department of Health. The Friends of Pearl City Library generously sponsor this 45-minute program.
The Pearl City Public Library isn’t just about childhood memories. It also played a crucial role in the community’s history. In 2015 after a $1.3 million renovation the library reopened its doors. The project addressed critical issues like re-flooring re-roofing and ceiling leaks. This extensive work showcases the library’s importance to the Pearl City community. Manager Vicky Bowie dedicated years of service to the library. She expressed relief and enthusiasm after the renovation was completed. A vital resource for local residents the library welcomes hundreds of visitors weekly. It offers various services. Their summer reading programs for kids teens and adults are particularly popular. The library also serves as a Passport Acceptance Facility.
