Did you know that Peaceful Hope Baptist Church’s history is intertwined with the very fabric of Dallas? It wasn’t always Peaceful Hope. The story begins not here but in a humble log cabin. In 1873 seven families gathered. They prayed for a church of their own. This wasn’t just any church. This was to be the first Black church in Dallas entirely organized and owned by Black people.
That log cabin on the corner of what is now Fairmount Street and Munger Avenue became the birthplace of New Hope Baptist Church. A traveling missionary Reverend John Hay helped organize this small group into a formal congregation. This act of faith was more than just a religious gathering. In a city still grappling with the aftermath of slavery it was a statement. It was a declaration of self-determination. It was the creation of a safe haven and a powerful symbol of hope.
Under Reverend Hay’s guidance and then Reverend R Griggs’ strong leadership New Hope flourished. Reverend Griggs didn’t stop at spiritual guidance. He established a grammar school. He created the first high school for Black children in Dallas. He even founded the state’s first African American newspaper.
New Hope’s influence grew under subsequent pastors. Reverend C N Pryor Reverend W D Isaac and particularly Dr Alexander Stephens Jackson. Dr Jackson a distinguished graduate of Atlanta and Colgate Universities transformed New Hope. The church built a large brick building. This was the first large brick building in Dallas owned and constructed by Black people. It rapidly became a center for cultural political and educational gatherings. Dr Jackson brought nationally known Black speakers such as Booker T Washington Mary Church Terrell and W E B Du Bois to Dallas.
The legacy continued with Reverend Maynard Jackson. His son Maynard Jackson Jr would become the first Black mayor of Atlanta. The church also played a significant role in voter registration. They fought for the rights of Black citizens. They encouraged their members to participate actively in the political process.
New Hope Baptist Church later moved its location in 1968. This church now known as Peaceful Hope Baptist Church continues its vital work in the community. Its Showers of Blessing ministry shows its commitment to serving the less fortunate. Peaceful Hope Baptist Church is more than just a building. It’s a living testament to faith perseverance and community resilience. It embodies the spirit of its name Peaceful Hope a beacon of strength through challenging times a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit.
