Imagine stepping into the Parisian sunshine, bathed in a warm glow as you gaze upon the Pavillon de l’Ermitage. This stunning structure, a small yet elegant jewel of French architecture, stands proudly, a remnant of a bygone era. It whispers tales of opulent Dukes and Duchesses. This charming pavilion, nestled amidst a serene garden, carries a captivating story. It was once part of the enchanting Chateau de Bagnolet, built in the 17th century for Marie de Bourbon-Condé, a woman of significant stature.

The Chateau de Bagnolet passed through various hands before being acquired in 1719 by the affluent Duke of Orleans, the Regent of France, during the minority of the future Louis XV. His beloved wife, Mademoiselle de Blois, the Duchess of Orleans, a legitimized daughter of King Louis XIV and the Marquise de Montespan, made it her cherished residence. She not only expanded the chateau but also had three pavilions built in the park. One of them, the Pavillon de l’Ermitage, was constructed between 1723 and 1727, marking a fine example of the Regency era’s architectural style.

The Duchess, a patron of the arts, commissioned Jean Valade, a renowned portrait artist, to paint murals inside the Pavillon de l’Ermitage, depicting hermit saints in contemplation, giving rise to its name. The chateau, however, did not survive the test of time. In 1769, the Orleans descendants sold the property, which was subsequently divided and demolished. The hospice Alquier-Debrousse was built in its place in 1884. But the Pavillon de l’Ermitage, a symbol of regal history, remained. This elegant pavilion was a haven for those who conspired to save Louis XVI, the very king whose daughter-in-law once graced the halls of the chateau. It served as a gathering place for loyalists who plotted his liberation. Even after his execution in 1793, the pavilion was used to hatch a daring plan to rescue Queen Marie Antoinette from the Temple prison, a plan that ultimately failed.

Today, the Pavillon de l’Ermitage stands as a testament to the resilience of time and the enduring power of stories. It is a haven for those who seek to reconnect with the grandeur of the past and delve into the intriguing tales of French aristocracy. A charming little remnant of a bygone era, this architectural marvel encapsulates a rich history, a testament to the ebb and flow of power, the resilience of a nation, and the enduring spirit of those who lived within its walls.
