Hidden within the vast expanse of the Saint-Germain-en-Laye forest stands the Pavillon de la Muette. It whispers tales of royal hunts and diplomatic intrigues. Let’s embark on a journey back to 1767. King Louis XV, an avid hunter, commissioned the renowned architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel to build a new hunting lodge. This would become the Pavillon de la Muette. Gabriel, fresh from completing the Petit Trianon at Versailles, drew inspiration from its elegant design. The Pavillon de la Muette echoed the Trianon’s facade, windows, and even the layout of the kitchens. Louis XV’s grandson, Louis XVI, inherited not only the throne but also a passion for hunting at the Pavillon de la Muette. He spent winters here, pursuing game through the forest. It is said that he even crossed paths with the writer Chateaubriand within these very walls, an encounter documented in Chateaubriand’s memoirs. Napoleon Bonaparte, ever the pragmatist, repurposed the Pavillon de la Muette. He renovated the apartments for his own use, continuing the tradition of hunting. His nephew, Napoleon III, transformed the Pavillon de la Muette into a hub of diplomatic activity. He hosted grand hunting parties. These served as a backdrop for international relations. Most notably, he entertained Queen Victoria here in 1855. Sadly, the Pavillon de la Muette fell into disrepair in the 20th century. By the 1970s, it was abandoned. The once-vibrant hunting lodge lay in ruins. The roof leaked, floors collapsed, and dry rot threatened to consume the structure. Thankfully, in 2019, two entrepreneurs with a passion for history, Benoit d’Halluin and Emmanuel Basse, stepped in. They embarked on an ambitious five-year restoration project. Working closely with the Ministry of Culture and historical preservation experts, they painstakingly brought the Pavillon de la Muette back to life. The restoration involved extensive repairs. The 250-year-old timber frame was reinforced, the intricate woodwork restored. Even the gardens were revitalized. Today, the Pavillon de la Muette stands as a testament to its rich history. It offers a glimpse into the lives of kings, emperors, and the grandeur of a bygone era.
