What remains of the grand Château de Bercy? Look around you. This unassuming pavilion, the Pavillon de chasse du château de Bercy, offers a glimpse into a vanished world of extravagance and grandeur. Once part of a sprawling estate, the Pavillon de chasse du château de Bercy stands as a lonely sentinel, a testament to the château’s former glory. The Château de Bercy, was commissioned in 1658 by Charles-Henri de Malon de Bercy. He was drawn to this picturesque bend in the Seine. He envisioned a country estate to rival the most lavish palaces. The architect François Le Vau, brother of the renowned Louis Le Vau who designed Vaux-le-Vicomte, was entrusted with bringing this vision to life. Sadly, François passed away in 1676 before the château’s completion. The task then fell to another prominent architect, Jacques de La Guêpière, who finished the château in 1715. The Pavillon de chasse du château de Bercy, designed by La Guêpière, was just one element in this grand scheme. Imagine a vast estate stretching as far as the eye could see. The château boasted opulent interiors, adorned by some of the finest craftsmen of the era. Its gardens, designed by the master landscaper André Le Nôtre, were renowned for their beauty. However, the tides of time can be cruel. In 1861, the Château de Bercy met an unfortunate end. It was demolished to make way for progress, as Paris expanded and the railway made its relentless advance. The Pavillon de chasse du château de Bercy stands before you, a poignant reminder of a bygone era.
