Have you ever seen a sail so large it seems to float? That’s the impression the facade of Pavillon 1 at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles gives. This isn’t just any exhibition hall. Pavillon 1 is the largest at the Expo center a giant space redesigned by the renowned architect Dominique Perrault.

It’s a marvel of modern architecture. The building boasts a 240-meter-long facade. This spectacular feature is made of metal fabric a shimmering curtain of stainless steel mesh. The mesh panels are fastened to a steel framework creating a stunning gallery for visitors to stroll through.

Perrault’s design is breathtaking. He created what’s known as “la grande voile” the great sail. Twenty-four mesh panels each enormous act like a sail floating eight meters above the ground. The transparency lets visitors enjoy a clear view of the surroundings. But the effect changes depending on the light and perspective. The mesh sometimes obscures the glass front creating a mysterious play of shadows and light.

To counteract the limited light of its north-facing position a third of the mesh panels are coated gold. These golden spirals are scattered seemingly randomly across the facade. They reflect sunlight creating a dazzling shimmer throughout the day and into the evening. The effect is magical transforming Pavillon 1 into a beacon of light and style.

At the heart of this ‘great sail’ is a gigantic LED screen. It showcases events taking place inside the pavilion. This blend of metal mesh and video technology makes it a captivating spectacle. Pavillon 1 even served as the venue for the handball competitions during the 2024 Olympic Games. Its unique facade attracted worldwide attention for the games. Its modern design fits perfectly with the vibrant and ever-evolving city it calls home.

Pavillon 1 is more than just an exhibition hall. It’s a testament to architectural innovation a dynamic space designed for interaction and spectacle. This space seamlessly blends aesthetics and functionality. It is a true symbol of modern Paris a must-see on any tour of this vibrant city.
