What if these walls could talk? The Pavilhão Reitor Haroldo Lisboa da Cunha has a story to tell. It’s a story of transformation and resilience.

This building is named after Haroldo Lisboa da Cunha. He was a mathematics professor. He also served as the rector of the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro UERJ.

The Pavilhão Reitor Haroldo Lisboa da Cunha stands on the UERJ campus in Maracanã. It was the first building constructed here. But its history goes back further. It was built on the remains of a would-be hospital. This hospital was known as the Hospital das Clínicas do Brasil. The incomplete structure became the origin of the Favela do Esqueleto.

In 1970, the facade was already standing. It displayed the UERJ logo proudly. Finally, in 1976, the Pavilhão Reitor Haroldo Lisboa da Cunha was inaugurated. This happened alongside the main pavilion, the Pavilhão João Lyra Filho. The locals affectionately call it “Haroldinho”.

Today, the Pavilhão Reitor Haroldo Lisboa da Cunha houses important academic departments. The Instituto Roberto Alcântara Gomes Ibrag is here. So is the Instituto de Química IQ. You’ll find courses in Biology, Chemistry, and Chemical Engineering within these walls.

Inside, you will find many important laboratories. These labs focus on diverse research areas. Examples are Diagnostics by DNA. Another is Research in Microcirculation. There is also Engineering and Technology of Petroleum and Petrochemical. Not to forget Radioecology and Global Changes.

In 2023, UERJ started restoration work on the Pavilhão Reitor Haroldo Lisboa da Cunha. The renovation includes the facade, the interior, and the roof. The goal is to improve conditions for professors. It also aims to provide more comfort for students.

The building is undergoing redevelopments to improve its internal spaces. Bathrooms and laboratories are being upgraded. Adjustments are being made to the ceiling and roof.

These improvements became possible. The university received funds for structural works. Around 10 million was specifically allocated to the Maracanã campus.

The Pavilhão Reitor Haroldo Lisboa da Cunha stands as a symbol. It represents UERJ’s commitment to education and research. It also embodies the university’s dedication to preserving its history. So, as you stand before this building, remember its past. Appreciate its present. And consider its future.
