In 1985, a unique partnership began. Furniture entrepreneur Ole Paustian commissioned the legendary Jørn Utzon, architect of the Sydney Opera House, to design a showroom. This building became the Paustian House, a striking landmark on Copenhagen’s waterfront. Paustian House opened in 1987. It showcases Utzon’s signature organic style. Utzon found inspiration in the Danish beech forests. He envisioned the building’s interior as a “hall of pillars,” mimicking the trees’ vertical trunks and branching canopy. The result is a light-filled, three-story structure. Inside, white, fan-topped columns rise to the ceiling, connected by geometric arches. It truly evokes a sense of being within a forest. The building also features the artistic touches of Utzon’s children. Kim Utzon, his son, later expanded the Paustian House. He added a restaurant and yacht club. Lin Utzon, his daughter, designed the interior décor, including the distinctive blue tiles that accent the wooden staircases. Although the Paustian showroom has moved, the Paustian House remains. It serves as a testament to Utzon’s architectural genius and a must-see for architecture enthusiasts visiting Copenhagen.
