“Lost rivers whisper secrets,” a weathered voice murmured. We stand before the Paußnitzgraben, a seemingly humble stream. Yet it holds tales of a Leipzig long past, a time when rivers wandered freely. The Paußnitzgraben itself is a relatively recent creation. It flows for 6 kilometers. Its modern journey begins as a branch of the Lauerschen Grenzgraben. This transformation occurred in the 1990s. Before that, the story is murkier, a testament to the ever-shifting waters of the Elster-Pleiße floodplain. The Paußnitzgraben meanders through the southern Auenwald. It touches the districts of Lauer, Großzschocher, and Connewitz. One stretch of the Paußnitzgraben, a straight 320-meter section, dates back to around 1900. The owners of the Großzschocher estate engineered this channel, replacing the stream’s natural, meandering path. Perhaps the old curves interfered with forestry. The name “Paußnitz” itself is ancient. Linguists believe it derives from the Old Sorbian word “Pust’nica.” This translates to “waste, desolate, empty stream.” An apt description, perhaps. This refers to the stream’s tendency to dry up in the summer months. Early maps from the 19th century offer glimpses into this watery past. An 1806 map labels a section in Connewitz as “die Pausens Lache” or “Pause’s Pond.” Another section in Großzschocher appears as “die schwarze Lache,” or “the black pond.” This suggests a landscape dotted with still waters, connected by ephemeral streams that appeared and disappeared with the floods. The Paußnitzgraben we see today is a fixed point in a landscape that was once fluid. A reminder of a time when rivers wrote their own stories on the land.
