The idea came from President Soeharto’s 1987 trip to Turkey. He saw many monuments telling stories of the past. He wanted Jakarta to have something similar. Soeharto commissioned I Nyoman Nuarta a Balinese sculptor. Forty artists helped build the statue in Bandung.

Each horse represents Asta Brata eight leadership philosophies. They are earth sun fire stars ocean wind rain and moon. Some horses are translucent. This is intentional. It symbolizes the shadow of leadership. A reminder that even leadership has its unseen aspects.

The statue’s cost was around 300 million rupiah in 1987. It needed renovations in 2014. Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama oversaw this. The renovations improved the water fountain and added areas for photos. Patung Kuda remains a powerful symbol. It stands as a tribute to strength justice and the enduring spirit of Indonesia.
