Gazing upon Patung Kuda Arjuna Wijaya, one might sense the echoes of ancient battles. This magnificent monument, officially known as “Untukmu Indonesia,” stands proudly at the intersection of Jalan MH Thamrin and Jalan Medan Merdeka. It captures a pivotal moment from the Mahabharata epic. Patung Kuda Arjuna Wijaya depicts Arjuna, bow in hand, and Krishna, his charioteer, atop a chariot drawn by eight majestic horses. These horses represent the “Asta Brata,” eight philosophies of leadership based on elements of the universe: earth, sun, fire, stars, ocean, wind, rain, and moon. The scene freezes the warriors in mid-battle against Karna, a formidable opponent from the rival Kaurava clan. The monument’s creation story is intriguing. In 1987, President Soeharto, inspired by Turkey’s monuments celebrating its past, commissioned a similar project for Jakarta. Sculptor Nyoman Nuarta proposed the Baratayuda War from the Mahabharata as the theme. Around 40 artists brought Patung Kuda Arjuna Wijaya to life in Bandung, West Java. Its construction cost was around 300 million rupiah in 1987. “Arjuna Wijaya,” meaning “Arjuna’s victory,” symbolizes his triumph in upholding righteousness and his unwavering courage. Patung Kuda Arjuna Wijaya reminds us of the importance of justice, even when facing difficult choices. Arjuna, despite facing his own brother in battle, chose the greater good. Some mistakenly refer to it as “Patung Arjuna Wiwaha,” which tells a different story of Arjuna marrying seven celestial nymphs. The monument underwent renovations in 2014, adding dynamic horse shadows, restoring the fountain, and creating photo spots. Patung Kuda Arjuna Wijaya stands as a testament to Indonesia’s rich history and artistic prowess. It embodies the spirit of victory and encourages us to stand for what’s right, even when it’s hard.
