Let me tell you about I Gusti Wayan Debes. He was a leader who fought against Japanese forces after Japan’s defeat. Even though Japan’s power waned, they still tried to hold onto control in Bali. On December 13, 1945, Debes led an attack on a Japanese base in Tabanan. Sadly, it wasn’t successful.
Debes was vital in securing weapons for the resistance. He helped form the DPRI in Munduk Malang on April 4, 1946. This council coordinated the fight for independence in the Sunda Kecil islands. To divert the Dutch, Debes also initiated a long march to Gunung Agung on June 1, 1946. This weakened defenses in West Bali. It then allowed weapons to be smuggled from Java.
Wayan Debes suggested raiding NICA forces in Tabanan for weapons. On November 18, 1946, Wagimin led young fighters into the NICA base. Wagimin’s clever planning ensured a successful raid. There were no casualties.
Tragedy struck on November 20, 1946. Wayan Debes, Gusti Ngurah Rai, and their fighters were surrounded by NICA soldiers. In the ensuing battle, Wayan Debes and his entire Ciung Wanara unit perished. They were defeated by the heavy attacks. The attacks came from both the air and the ground.
The Patung Debes – Wagimin Statue stands as a reminder of their sacrifice. Their names live on. I Gusti Wayan Debes’ name is honored with a street. It runs in front of the Pancaka Tirta Heroes Cemetery. Also, a sports venue in Gerokgak bears his name. Wagimin’s name also marks a street and a field in Tabanan.
