“20 Gulden? Imagine trying to run a research institute with such meager funds!” We stand before the imposing Pathologisches Institut der LMU, a far cry from its humble beginnings. This grand neoclassical building, completed in 1929, speaks to the institute’s eventual rise to prominence. It’s hard to believe its founder, Ludwig von Buhl, once lamented having to pay for his own scalpels! Appointed the first professor of pathology in Munich in 1859, Buhl initially conducted dissections in cramped rooms within the anatomy department. His dedication, fueled by a thirst for knowledge about diseases, led to a significant increase in autopsies. His work, alongside luminaries like Max von Pettenkofer, focused on tackling pressing health crises like tuberculosis which, in 1875, accounted for a staggering 29% of deaths in Munich. The Pathologisches Institut der LMU we see today owes its existence to Buhl’s tireless advocacy for a dedicated pathology research center. His vision, articulated in his 1875 inaugural address, was to unite pathological anatomy, histology, chemistry, physics, and experimental methods under one roof. He understood that to unravel the mysteries of disease, a multidisciplinary approach was key. The institute’s history is intertwined with the evolution of pathology itself, from simple observation and collection of specimens to the sophisticated research we see today. The Pathologisches Institut der LMU stands as a testament to the relentless pursuit of knowledge, driven by generations of passionate individuals determined to understand and combat disease.
