Why is this church called Passionskirche when it doesn’t even look that old? Well, appearances can be deceiving! You see, the Passionskirche we stand before today isn’t the original structure. It’s a modern iteration, built in 1970, but its story goes back much further. The original Passionskirche, a “Notkirche” or emergency church, was erected here in 1933. It was a time of economic hardship, and the rapidly growing population of Obersendling needed a place of worship. That first church, built of simple materials, served the community faithfully for over three decades. Can you imagine the solace it provided during the tumultuous years of World War II? Even amidst the air raids that ravaged Munich, the Passionskirche, though slightly damaged, remained a beacon of hope. By the 1960s, the congregation had outgrown their humble church. A new building was needed, a testament to their enduring faith. And so, in 1970, this striking red-brick edifice was inaugurated. Inside, you’ll find a minimalist design, a deliberate choice to emphasize the connection between the worshipper and the divine. Its most striking feature is the altar, crafted from Travertin and adorned with carvings of wheat and grapes, symbolizing the bread and wine of Holy Communion. Above the altar, a modern sculpture representing the “Resurrection Sun” casts its warm glow, a powerful symbol of hope and renewal. The Passionskirche, though modern in form, embodies the enduring spirit of faith that has sustained generations.
