Have you ever crossed a bridge that whispers stories of resilience? The Passerelle du Collège, right before us, does just that. This pedestrian bridge, Lyon’s oldest remaining bridge spanning the Rhône, has a tale to tell. It’s a story of connection, disaster, and rebirth. The Passerelle du Collège owes its name to the Collège Ampère, formerly the Jesuit Grand College. Initially built between 1842 and 1845, it provided a direct route for students from the left bank to the college on the right. The bridge also served the growing urbanization of the left bank. It linked the Presqu’île to the Morand district. Tragedy struck in 1844. During its construction, a cable bolt snapped, causing the bridge to collapse. Eight workers, along with the entrepreneur Santil, lost their lives in the Rhône’s waters. Despite this setback, the Passerelle du Collège was swiftly rebuilt. It was opened to the public in 1845. A century later, further misfortune befell the bridge. In 1944, retreating German forces dynamited it, leaving the structure in ruins. The sculpted lions that once graced its entrance vanished. Yet again, the Passerelle du Collège rose from the ashes. Reconstructed, it reopened in 1945, a testament to the city’s enduring spirit. While the reconstruction mirrored the original design, the sculpted ornaments were not replaced. Several renovations have marked the bridge’s lifespan. In the 1980s, the wooden deck and supporting structure were replaced with aluminum. A 1996 renovation further modernized the bridge. Today, the Passerelle du Collège serves pedestrians and cyclists. It connects Quai Jean Moulin on the right bank to Quai Sarrail on the left. Look at how the slender metal deck is suspended between two stone pillars. These pillars, anchored on rock embankments, each feature an arch. It elevates the suspension cables and creates a passageway underneath. The Passerelle du Collège is more than a bridge. It is a symbol of Lyon’s resilience. Each step you take across it echoes the stories of its past.
