In 1897, a bridge was built to solve a problem. The newly formed commune of Alfortville needed direct access to the Charenton train station. The solution? The Passerelle d’Alfortville. This bridge offered a much needed shortcut, bypassing the long detour via the Pont de Charenton. This first Passerelle d’Alfortville was a metal marvel. It spanned not just the Marne River, but also Île Martinet and the Saint-Maurice Canal. Over time, the landscape changed. The Saint-Maurice Canal was filled. The bustling Route Nationale 4 took its place. The Passerelle d’Alfortville adapted, rebuilt in 1952 to suit the evolving landscape. However, the biggest transformation came with the arrival of the A4 motorway in 1972. Île Martinet was redesigned. The Passerelle d’Alfortville was once again reborn, this time in its current shorter form. This steel beam bridge, standing proudly on its concrete pillars, is a testament to changing times. Today, the Passerelle d’Alfortville serves as a vital link for pedestrians and cyclists. It connects the communities of Alfortville and Charenton-le-Pont, offering breathtaking views and a sense of history. As you cross the Passerelle d’Alfortville, take a moment to appreciate its journey. It’s a journey that mirrors the constant evolution of Paris itself.
