But why name a passage “Michelin”? Passage Michelin might conjure images of fine dining. Michelin is now an iconic standard. It is known for international fine dining. But its origins are humbler.

Let’s go back to 1889. French brothers André and Édouard Michelin founded Michelin Tire. There were fewer than 3000 cars then. The brothers were visionaries. They wanted to create demand for cars. This would increase the need for tires.

So, the first Michelin Guide appeared in 1900. Standard guides focused on major roads. They ignored landmarks and services. The Michelin Guide included maps. It also had instructions for tire repairs. Locations of mechanics and gas stations were listed. The idea was to make driving comfortable. They also wanted to encourage exploration. This would put more mileage on tires. Restaurants and hotels along routes were added.

The Michelin Guide quickly grew popular. By World War I, it expanded to Europe. Production halted during the war. In 1920, the guide was upgraded. It was no longer free. André Michelin saw it propping up a workbench. He decided people respect what they pay for. It sold for 7 francs. Restaurants were categorized. Anonymous mystery diners were recruited.

World War II stopped production again. The Allied Forces found the maps useful in 1939. The guide resumed then. It wasn’t until 2005 that the guide focused on the U.S. It began with New York City. Today, Michelin star-rated restaurants are worldwide.

The Michelin Man came about in 1898. A pile of tires inspired him. Rubber was naturally white then. Automotive tires were also white. His name is Bibendum. It comes from the Latin “Nunc est bibendum”. This means “now is the time to drink”. Michelin tires would “drink up” any obstacle. It’s interesting how drinking ties into fine dining.

Michelin Star ratings began in 1926. A single star meant a special experience. Two and three stars were added in 1931.

One star means high-quality cooking. It is worth a stop. Two stars mean excellent cooking. It is worth a detour. Three stars mean exceptional cuisine. It is worth a special journey.

Michelin also has Bib Gourmand. This is for great food at moderate prices. It is named after the Michelin Man. It recognizes high-quality food. It costs about $40 for three courses. This includes a starter, main course, and dessert.

Michelin Stars are awarded annually. Anonymous inspectors visit restaurants multiple times. They visit in different seasons. They come on weekends and weekdays. Inspectors visit at lunch and dinner. They create a detailed report. This report is reviewed.

Michelin’s Star ratings are prestigious. What began as marketing became a phenomenon. Michelin Star restaurants inspire journeys worldwide. So, Passage Michelin. It may not have Michelin-starred restaurants right here. But its name carries a legacy. It speaks to travel and discovery. It hints at culinary excellence.
