Beneath this railway bridge lies Passage Magellan. A modest passage it may be but its story is rich. Named in 2015 this unassuming thoroughfare connects the Docks district near the Saône River to the Cours Charlemagne in the Confluence district. It begins on Rue Hrant Dink between GL Events and Euronews. It ends on Cours Charlemagne facing Square Gras and the Pasteur Bridge.

Passage Magellan’s existence is surprisingly recent. Born from the construction of a railway bridge in August 2015 the roadway opened around 2016. A 2015 Blay plan shows its route extending to the Rhône. The passage’s name is a tribute to Ferdinand Magellan. His namesake strait connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Magellan a Portuguese navigator born around 1480 died in 1521 in the Philippines. His expedition achieved the first circumnavigation of the globe. Unlike his contemporary Jean de Verrazane only a passage in Lyon connects him to the city.

The architecture is simple. A concrete pathway that descends to pass under the bridge. In 2017 a single building a brown facade above four oblique pillars stood overlooking Rue Dink. It was still under construction. Today Passage Magellan is primarily a roadway for cars. It is also designed for pedestrians and cyclists with a two-way bike path. The passage aims to ease traffic flow toward the Pasteur intersection avoiding Rue Montrochet and Cours Charlemagne.

Passage Magellan may lack the grandeur of a wide boulevard or the charm of a historic street. Yet it embodies Lyon’s modern evolution. A testament to urban planning and a subtle nod to a pivotal moment in global exploration. Its quiet existence is a reminder that even the smallest streets can hold stories of great significance. Next time you find yourself in Lyon take a moment to appreciate this unassuming passage. Remember its unique history and the explorer who inspired its name.
