What was once a humble shortcut has become a celebrated slice of Parisian history. This is the Passage du Marivel. Forget the bustling boulevards. Imagine instead a tranquil escape into a bygone era. The covered passages of Paris, like the Passage du Marivel, offer exactly that. These passages are shortcuts from one street to another. They were constructed in the early nineteenth century within existing buildings.

Before the Champs-Élysées stole the show, these passages were the place to find the latest fashions. Today, the Passage du Marivel welcomes a variety of shops and restaurants. Each has its own unique atmosphere.

Many covered passages sprung up in the early 1800s. The muddy, narrow streets of Paris were not pedestrian-friendly. Wealthy Parisians needed a place to shop and socialize. The passages couverts were the answer.

Determining the very first passage is tricky. However, Passage Feydau, opened around 1790, is often cited. The golden age of these passages began to fade after 1860. Department stores and Haussmann’s renovations changed the city. Of the 150 or so covered passages, only about 18 remain today.

One standout is the Galerie Vivienne. Inaugurated in 1826, it showcases a stunning mosaic floor by Giandomenico Facchina. Another is Passage Colbert. It was built to rival Galerie Vivienne but never achieved the same success.

Then there’s Passage des Panoramas. It opened in 1799 and is known for its original facades and stamp collectors. Passage Jouffroy, built in 1845, was modern for its time. It was the first to use only metal and glass. Passage Brady, also known as Little India, offers a vibrant and aromatic experience.

Passage Choiseul stands out for its length. At 190 meters, it is the longest covered passage in Paris. Galerie Véro-Dodat charms visitors with its calm ambiance and unique decorations. Passage du Grand Cerf impresses with its wrought-iron structure and high ceiling.

Passage des Princes caters to children with its toy and game shops. Passage du Caire is the oldest, dating back to 1798. Passage Verdeau attracts book lovers with its vintage booksellers. Finally, Passage de l’Ancre offers a quaint and colorful escape.

Exploring these passages offers a glimpse into a hidden Paris. These architectural gems provide shelter from the rain and a trip back to the Belle Époque. The Passage du Marivel may not be the most famous. However, it encapsulates the charm and history of these unique Parisian treasures. So take a stroll. Discover the secrets of the Passage du Marivel for yourself.
