Tucked away in the heart of Paris, Passage du Dauphiné whispers secrets of a bygone era. This hidden gem, connecting Rue Dauphine and Rue Mazarine, opened in 1825. Passage du Dauphiné offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city. It holds a unique charm, often overlooked by Parisians themselves. The passage’s creation intertwines with the history of Rue Dauphine. Rue Dauphine emerged in 1607 under Henri IV’s reign. It was a new route linking the newly created Place Dauphine on Île de la Cité to Rue Saint-André des Arts. The street’s name honored the Dauphin, Henri IV’s son, the future King Louis XIII. Passage du Dauphiné arose from the remnants of a former gambling house. It intersects with the ancient medieval wall of Paris, the Philippe Auguste wall. Within number 13, now occupied by language institutes, lie hidden remnants of this wall and a tower. These vestiges are visible in the Philippe-Auguste amphitheater located in the basement. Passage du Dauphiné retains much of its original charm. The old cobblestones and the path zigzagging between buildings create a picturesque scene. A fig tree graces the passage, adding to its enchanting atmosphere. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful break at the terrace of L’Heure Gourmande tea room at number 22. Passage du Dauphiné is a delightful discovery for those seeking a quiet retreat in the vibrant Saint-Germain-des-Prés district.
