“Power up!” someone shouts as construction roars around us. The Pasir Gudang Power Plant stands here. It’s a vital artery in Malaysia’s energy grid. This plant is not just a source of power. It is a symbol of innovation. It also represents regional cooperation.

Pasir Gudang Power Plant’s story began with a pressing need. Peninsular Malaysia faced power disruptions in 2014. Tenaga Nasional Berhad or TNB had to import power. It came from Thailand and Singapore to stabilize the grid. The Energy Commission knew action was needed. Track 4A was born to address this.

The Pasir Gudang Power Plant is strategically located. It sits in Pasir Gudang. This mangrove-fringed city is in Johor. It is near the Johor Strait from Singapore. The city is an important international port. It is bolstered by palm oil, petrochemical, and IT industries.

Track 4A aimed to build two 720-MW combined cycle gas turbine power plants. Southern Power Generation or SPG was the special purpose vehicle. TNB first withdrew. It then returned in 2017. It acquired a 51% share in SPG. TNB increased its share to 70% in September 2020.

The Pasir Gudang Power Plant boasts impressive technology. It features the first commercial GE 9HA.02 gas turbines. These are among the world’s largest. They are also the most efficient power-generating models. The US$1.1 billion plant commenced operations in January 2021.

Track 4A increased Peninsular Malaysia’s generating capacity. It rose to 25962 MW. It helps the nation meet its climate ambitions. Malaysia committed to reducing carbon emissions. The goal was a 45% reduction by 2030 compared to 2005 levels. The country also targeted 20% renewable energy by 2025.

REMACO operates and maintains both Track 4A plants. It is a subsidiary of TNB Power Generation. SPG supplies power to TNB. This is through a 21-year power purchase agreement.

The Track 4A power station has two single-shaft blocks. Each has 720MW capacity. The units run on natural gas. Distillate serves as a back-up fuel. Each block has a 9HA.02 gas turbine. It also has an STF-D650 steam turbine. A W88 generator and a horizontal HRSG complete it.

Petronas supplies natural gas to the Track 4A plant. This is under a 21-year agreement. TNB purchases the power generated. This is also under a 21-year agreement.

CTCI Corporation and GE built the Pasir Gudang Power Plant. They were awarded the EPC contract in October 2016. GE supplied the turbine and generator equipment. AFRY acted as the Owner’s Engineer. They provided project management and site supervision.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought challenges. Movement control orders caused delays. HKA provided contract management support. They helped SPG navigate claims and disputes. Their expertise was instrumental. They identified problems early. They also devised mitigation measures.

The Pasir Gudang Power Plant stands as a testament to engineering. It shows project management and regional cooperation. It powers homes and industries. It also contributes to a greener future for Malaysia. Next time you switch on a light, remember the Pasir Gudang Power Plant. It is the force behind the current.
