Nestled in the Buda hills, Pasarét whispers tales of a bygone era. Pasarét wasn’t always the tranquil neighborhood you see today. Originally known as Sauwiesen, meaning “Pig Meadow,” and later Schmalzbergel, or “Fat Hill,” Pasarét reflects a history rooted in the German language spoken by its early inhabitants. But even then, Hungarian persisted, a testament to the area’s enduring cultural heritage. Older maps simply label this place as Ried, or meadow. Serbian residents of the Castle District called it Paša, their word for meadow. The name Pasarét, a blend of the Serbian and Hungarian words for meadow, emerged in 1847 thanks to Gábor Döbrentei. The arrival of the Budapest Cog-wheel Railway in 1874 marked a turning point. Imagine the chugging of that first train, ascending the hill on June 24th, ushering in a new era of accessibility for Pasarét. The very roads beneath our feet owe their existence to the clay mines of the 1880s, now the site of the Vasas Sporttelep. By the early 20th century, Pasarét transformed into a sought-after villa quarter. Grand homes dotted the landscape, attracting prominent figures like composers Béla Bartók and Ernő Dohnányi, politician Imre Nagy, and writers István Örkény and Antal Szerb. Pasarét’s charm lies not only in its natural beauty but also in the echoes of its past, a past shaped by diverse languages, a pioneering railway, and the creative minds it attracted.
