“Thirty years ago. That is when the Sketch Up company was born.” This marks the beginning of our tale at the Parvis des Arts. Five years later, this group founded the Parvis des Arts. It took root within a former temple in the heart of Marseille’s 3rd arrondissement.
The goal? To unite diverse audiences. To foster creation, questioning, and shared experiences. Now, twenty-five years onward, the Parvis des Arts is evolving.
The team is changing. It is expanding! Julien Therme is now directing this venue. It has two performance spaces. It maintains its core triple mission. The Parvis des Arts operates as a theater school. Performers from Sketch Up and le Funambule lead workshops for all ages, starting from age seven.
It serves as a theater. Artists find a home here. They are in residency. It functions as a space for meetings and discussions. These discussions revolve around art, morals, and ethics.
To mark this shift, the editorial team spoke with Julien Therme. He reminded them that the Parvis. It is historically a place of encounter. He says this is where theater began in the Middle Ages. It was a neutral ground for interactions.
This definition fits this cultural space perfectly. Generations, backgrounds, and cultures converge here. From theater courses to debates, the Parvis is vibrant. It is always open to everyone. The association Profil hosts debates. Musicians grace the stage for jazz concerts organized by Le Cris du Port. There are also shows for young audiences.
Nestled in this district, the Parvis des Arts has become a fixture. It has cultivated its audience. It has built a solid reputation. It consistently offers something for everyone.
In 2016, laughter filled the Parvis des Arts with improv matches. The audience welcomed Francesco Agnello. He is a world-renowned percussionist. He presented a concert and two plays. Companies like Les Vagabonds des étoiles and les Troupes du Théâtre de Versant showcased creations for all.
Some, like the compagnie d’ici and les loups masqués, settled in as residents. They presented several creations on the Parvis’s stage. Emmanuel Djob also graced the Parvis. He is a pioneer in the gospel music revival in both Spain and France. He gained fame through The Voice.
The Parvis des Arts continues to host the Amateur Theater festival. Later in the year, it holds the Sur le fil festival. To celebrate its anniversary, the Parvis team and Sketch Up are planning a special event. It will take place during Easter week. The theme, naturally, is “Renaissances”.
