Was it truly liberation or the start of another form of oppression? The Antifascist Monument in Budapest sparks debate even today. This memorial, found at the southern end of V Szabadság tér, remembers the victims of the German occupation.

However, its presence is still controversial. Many believe the Arrow Cross Party fully supported the Nazis. The Arrow Cross Party leader Ferenc Szálasi was in power in 1944. Some locals also supported the Nazis.

An alternative memorial exists nearby. Protesters have created it using candles, letters and personal items. The official monument remains without official dedication.

The monument depicts Hungary as the Archangel Gabriel. It is being attacked by an eagle. The eagle symbolizes Germany. The inscription reads “In memory of the victims”.

Critics argue it fails to recognize the Holocaust’s specific horror. Almost all Hungarian citizens murdered during the Holocaust were Jews. The monument suggests all Hungarians were innocent victims. It does not recognize Hungarian citizens were complicit. They helped round up Jews. They put them into ghettos. They transported them to camps.

The Hungarian government deflects blame. They put sole responsibility on the Germans for the Holocaust. Many governments played a role in handing over Jews. Some were even paid to do so.

Consider the Shoes on the Danube Bank monument. It remembers the Arrow Cross party’s murders in the winter of 1944-45. Thousands of Jewish citizens were killed. Many were shot into the Danube River. They were murdered without mercy. Militiamen forced the Jewish victims to remove their shoes. The shoes were taken as a commodity.

This memorial also fails to address the victims as Jewish. The plaque reads “To the memory of the victims shot into the Danube”. The victims were murdered by Arrow Cross militiamen in 1944-1945.

Monuments are important. They bring history to the public. They keep the memory of victims alive. We must critically examine them. We must ensure they tell the whole story. They should not distort the truth. They must not deflect accountability. The Antifascist Monument in Budapest is a reminder of this complex past. It is a reminder of the dangers of historical revisionism. It stands as a challenge to remember all victims. It encourages us to acknowledge the full truth of history. It urges us to strive for a more just future.
