Could a bridge change the course of history? In the case of Partido de Morón, it absolutely did. Right here, in the heart of Greater Buenos Aires, the Partido de Morón stretches out before us, a place shaped by a bridge and a battle. Partido de Morón wasn’t always the bustling hub we see today. In the 18th century, it was a quiet stop on the Camino Real, the royal road from Buenos Aires to Córdoba. Everything changed in 1771 with the construction of a pontoon bridge over the Morón Brook. This bridge, built by Pedro Márquez, made the area more accessible and led to the official establishment of Cañada de Morón in 1785. The bridge not only facilitated trade and travel, but it also became a strategic point in the Argentine civil wars. The pivotal Battle of Márquez Bridge in 1829 saw the Federalists, led by Juan Manuel de Rosas, triumph over General Juan Lavalle. This victory cemented Rosas’s control over Buenos Aires Province. Partido de Morón, forever linked to this battle, played a significant role in shaping the political landscape of Argentina. Fast forward to the 1850s, and wheat farms began to replace cattle ranches. The arrival of the Buenos Aires Western Railway in 1859 further fueled growth. The town planners, recognizing the need for organization, commissioned urbanist Pedro Benoit to design a master plan. This forward-thinking approach shaped the development of Partido de Morón. Today, the partido encompasses a population of over 300,000 and covers an area of 52 square kilometers. Its head town is Morón city, located approximately 17 kilometers from the heart of Buenos Aires. From its humble beginnings as a quiet way station, Partido de Morón has evolved into a vital part of the Greater Buenos Aires urban area. The echoes of its past, from the clash of armies to the rumble of trains, resonate through its streets.
