The Parroquia Stella Maris, dedicated to Our Lady, Star of the Sea, stands as a testament to Carrasco’s origins as a seaside resort in the early 20th century. Its very name, “Stella Maris,” meaning “Star of the Sea,” reflects this coastal connection. Constructed in 1918 by architect Rafael Ruano, the church’s design evokes a sense of simple elegance. The soaring, two-sloped roof and intricate interior wooden beams are especially noteworthy. These architectural details, combined with the sloped slate roofs and vibrant stained-glass windows, create a unique neo-Gothic style. The parish itself wasn’t officially established until 1934. Over time, the Parroquia Stella Maris has become more than just a place of worship. It’s a hub for community activities and a symbol of resilience. Originally, the church consisted of a single nave. Later, two side naves and a transept were added to accommodate the growing congregation. A wooden image of Christ Pantocrator now graces the main altar. A statue of the Virgin of the Thirty-Three, the patron saint of Uruguay, stands in the front yard. Interestingly, the original image of Stella Maris was moved from the main altar to a side altar in 1961. It’s believed this image may have been brought from Paris in 1919 by the Arocena family, instrumental in Carrasco’s development. The Parroquia Stella Maris played a significant role during the tragic events of the 1972 Andes flight disaster. The church became a place of solace and prayer for families awaiting news of their loved ones. This event cemented the church’s place in the community’s heart. Today, the Parroquia Stella Maris continues to thrive, buzzing with various activities. From catechism classes for children to youth groups and outreach programs, the church remains a vital part of the Carrasco community.
