Dedicated to both Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Thérèse of Lisieux the church before you is more than just a building. It is the Parroquia Santa Teresita del Niño Jesús. This Roman Catholic parish church stands in the neighborhood of Prado. Locals often call it Iglesia de los Carmelitas.

The story of Parroquia Santa Teresita del Niño Jesús begins long before its physical structure. In 1910, Father Constancio del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús arrived in Uruguay. He recognized the potential of the Prado neighborhood. By 1914, he decided it was the perfect place for a Carmelite community.

Initially, the community resided in a rented house. But Father Constancio envisioned something grander. He wanted a convent and chapel. These would serve the growing number of faithful followers. The designs were conceived in the Neo-Gothic style by architects Román Berro and Américo Bonaba. The cornerstone was laid on March 31, 1916. Just over a year later, in July 1917, the community celebrated the inauguration of their new convent and chapel.

Over time, the small chapel could no longer accommodate the increasing number of parishioners. Father Lorenzo de San Joaquín proposed acquiring adjacent land. His idea was to construct a larger church. Architects Isola and Armas presented plans that were accepted. On March 31, 1929, the first stone of the new Iglesia dedicated to the Virgen del Carmen and Santa Teresita del Niño Jesús was placed.

Construction took many years. In September 1937, Archbishop Juan Francisco Aragone blessed the new temple. However, the project was not fully completed until 1954. The Parroquia Santa Teresita del Niño Jesús was officially established on December 8, 1962.

The architectural style is distinctly Neo-Gothic. This is evident in its pointed arches and detailed decorations. The central nave soars to 22.5 meters. The side naves reach 17.5 meters. The church extends 40 meters in length.

Inside, light streams through stained glass windows. Some of these intricate windows were brought from Germany. Others came from Argentina. The original plan intended for all the windows to come from Europe. World War II made this impossible.

Near the sanctuary, you will find images of Santa Teresa de Jesús and San Juan de la Cruz. These statues were brought from Barcelona. They stand alongside a crucified Christ. Juan Zorrilla de San Martín donated this figure.

Today, Parroquia Santa Teresita del Niño Jesús remains an active parish. It offers programs for all ages. These include catechism for children. There is confirmation for teenagers. Adults can participate in Bible study groups. The parish also extends its reach beyond its walls. Members visit local nursing homes.

Interestingly, the Carmelites handed over the parish to the Clergy in 1996. This arrangement was made until 2008. The church continues to be a hub of community life. It is known as one of the most popular churches for weddings in Montevideo.

So, as you stand before the Parroquia Santa Teresita del Niño Jesús remember its long history. It began with a visionary priest and a small community. It evolved into the beautiful church we see today.
