Parroquia Santa Rita de Casia

Whispers of faith echo through the years at Parroquia Santa Rita de Casia. This sanctuary, nestled in Montevideo’s Punta Gorda neighborhood, has a rich history interwoven with the growth of the community. Parroquia Santa Rita de Casia began its journey in 1949 when Augustinian friars arrived from Buenos Aires. Their first mass was a humble affair, held in the garden of their simple residence on Friburgo street. The altar was a dining table, the wine a gift from a Basque neighbor, but the spirit of faith was strong. Parroquia Santa Rita de Casia quickly became a cornerstone of the community. The first small chapel, built in 1952, was a testament to the dedication of the parishioners and the tireless fundraising efforts of Father Epifanio Alaez. The cornerstone of this original structure, laid in 1949, contained a time capsule: newspapers, coins, medals of Saint Rita, and the hopes of a burgeoning community. Parroquia Santa Rita de Casia continued to grow alongside Punta Gorda. By 1956, the area boasted around 7,000 residents, a mix of Uruguayans and foreigners, drawn to the tranquil seaside atmosphere. The parish served as a spiritual center, particularly for the area’s children, many of whom received their First Communion instruction within its walls. The dream of a larger church, however, was postponed as the focus shifted to establishing the Colegio Santa Rita, further solidifying the Augustinians’ presence in the community. The current church, a testament to the evolving needs of the parish, was consecrated in 1991. Its striking modern design stands in contrast to the original humble chapel, yet it continues to hold the same spirit of faith and community. Within its walls hangs a unique image of Christ, a four-meter-tall sculpture created by Jaime Escala. This “living Christ”, with its large hands and walking feet, symbolizes the active, present nature of Christ in the world. Parroquia Santa Rita de Casia’s story is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s about the unwavering faith of a community, the dedication of its religious leaders, and the enduring power of hope. It’s a story that continues to be written with every mass, every baptism, every act of service performed within its walls.
