Parroquia Santa Lucía began as a small chapel. Doña María Josefa de Alquizalete built it in 1783. She moved it to her estate in Barracas. This humble chapel became a focal point for the community.
Popular devotion to Santa Lucía dates back even further. It started around 1733. The original chapel was near what is now Sarmiento and Montevideo streets. In 1783 Doña María Josefa moved the chapel to Barracas. This area was once part of the Catedral parish.
The current church building was completed in 1887. It was blessed and opened on December 13. Its architectural style is French Renaissance. This gives the Parroquia Santa Lucía a unique and elegant appearance. The church was consecrated in 1898.
The story of Santa Lucía is interwoven with the history of Barracas. For many years December 13 was Barracas Day. This celebrated the Saint’s Day. It honored the deep connection between the saint and the neighborhood. In 2003 the city moved Barracas Day to August 30. But the devotion to Santa Lucía remains strong.
The annual procession is a highlight. It is a tradition that is over a century old. The image of Santa Lucía travels along Avenida Montes de Oca. The Archbishop of Buenos Aires usually leads the central mass. In 2023 it was Archbishop Jorge García Cuerva.

The church has undergone renovations over the years. Father Paso Viola refurbished and decorated the temple. Monsignor Isidoro A. Piedrabuena built the new parish house. He also created new facilities for the parish school.
Santa Lucía is the patron saint of Barracas. In 2023 the city of Buenos Aires officially recognized this. A law declared December 13 as the Day of the Patron Saint of Barracas. This further cemented the bond between Santa Lucía and the community.
The festivities begin early on Saint’s Day. The Parroquia Santa Lucía opens its doors at 5:30 AM. Masses are held throughout the day. They start at 6 AM and continue until 9 PM.
